For every 3.49 micrograms of accumulated pollutants per cubic centimeter, brain white matter decreased by 6.23 cubic centimeters, which is equivalent to one to two years of brain aging. This correlation remained after adjusting for multiple variables.
Brain aging may be accelerated in air pollution
Exposure to air pollution may accelerate brain aging, a new study finds.
The study was conducted on 1,403 women without dementia who had participated in another large health study between 1996 and 1998.
In 2005 and 2006, the researchers measured the brain volume of these women, who were between the ages of 71 and 89, using magnetic resonance imaging scans.
Using residential records and air pollution data, the researchers estimated their exposure to air pollution from 1999 to 2006.
They used data recorded at stations that monitor PM 2.5, a particulate matter that readily enters the lungs.
As unbelievable as it may sound, indoor air pollution causes more deaths globally each year than traffic accidents, the world's number one cause of death.
According to WHO statistics, the number of people who die in traffic accidents is about 1.2 million per year, while the number of people who die from diseases caused by indoor air pollution has reached 2 million.
Fine particulate matter remains the main culprit
For every 3.49 micrograms of accumulated pollutants per cubic centimeter, the brain's white matter decreases by 6.23 cubic centimeters, which is equivalent to brain aging for one to two years.
This correlation remains after adjusting for multiple variables.
While previous studies have suggested that air pollution may cause inflammation and damage to the vascular system, this study, published in The Annals of-Neurology, suggests that air pollution causes brain damage.
“This tells us that the harm caused by air pollution is not limited to the circulatory system,” said first author Juquan Chen, associate professor of preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. Dr. Jiu-Chiuan-Chen, associate professor at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, said.
“For the aging brain, particulate matter in the surrounding air is a neurotoxin in the natural environment.”
When summer arrives, air conditioners are used in confined spaces, both in offices and indoors.
The use of air-conditioned rooms are generally more sealed, which makes the indoor air turbid, germs breeding, carbon dioxide and other harmful gases increase in concentration, if there are still people smoking indoors, will be more exacerbated by the deterioration of indoor air.
In such an environment is bound to make people dizzy, nausea, vomiting.
Allergic rhinitis patients stay in the air-conditioned house for a long time may also cause the recurrence of allergic rhinitis.
People need fresh air when they sleep
More than 80% of the time, life, work indoors, and every day in the bedroom sleep time up to 8 hours, children need to sleep longer.
The quality of sleep is directly related to the health of the human body, related to the daily work, study and life.
People in the sleep time 8 hours without consciousness, this is the person to restore energy to eliminate fatigue to restore the body's best time, and precisely this time the most in need of oxygen.
Continuously into the bedroom fresh air for people's sleep, for the recovery of the human body is very very important.
Relevant information shows that: the human body in the metabolic process, will produce a large number of chemical substances, totaling more than 500 kinds, of which 149 kinds from the respiratory tract, such as carbon dioxide, ammonia and so on.
If you let three people in the doors and windows closed 10 square meters of the room to read a book, 3 hours after the test will find that the room's carbon dioxide increased by 3 times, ammonia increased by 2 times.
So the longer the doors and windows are closed, the higher the concentration of carbon dioxide in the room, and the more depressing and stuffy one feels.
Sleeping habits of modern urbanites: sleeping with windows and doors closed, poor bedroom air environment
We all may have some feeling, such as windows and doors closed in the winter is very tight, get up in the morning and open the window to feel the outdoor air is very fresh, in fact, it is not so.
Outdoor air is not going to change, the atmosphere is basically constant every moment, because the indoor air is too bad, two people eight hours of breathing, the indoor air is very poor degree before feeling fresh.
In addition to the use of air conditioning brought about by air quality problems, stay in the closed room, because the decoration and the release of harmful gases such as benzene, formaldehyde and other harmful gases, high temperatures caused by the drop in air humidity, home appliances released harmful gases, and cooking, whether it is a gas cooker or solid fuel combustion of soot, exhaust, etc. will be filled with the whole room, so the room is not safe, and if the air is bad, more likely to damage health.
Are you still struggling to breathe indoors? Hurry up to install an air purifier to protect your sleep, so that you can sleep with peace of mind!
