Is the “IQ tax” water purifier really worth it?

Does more filtration mean better performance?

Is installing a water purifier a permanent solution?

As people pursue higher living standards and greater health awareness, water purifiers have become essential appliances in many households. However, this trend has also sparked numerous rumors and misconceptions about these devices.

Today, Susan will debunk five common myths about water purifiers and reveal the truth!

Myth #1: Water purifiers are useless?

The role of water purifiers should not be underestimated.

Not only do they effectively remove impurities, odors, residual chlorine, pesticide residues, and other harmful substances from water, but they also defend against bacteria, viruses, and heavy metals in water, safeguarding the health and safety of your family's drinking water.

Myth #2Water purifiers are only needed in rural areas or places with poor water quality?

Water purifiers are essential in both urban and rural settings.

While city tap water undergoes preliminary treatment, it may still contain residual chlorine, fine particulates, and secondary contamination from aging pipes.

Moreover, drinking water has evolved from “just drinking” to “drinking healthily.” Drinking with peace of mind and enjoying pure, refreshing water is what modern people seek for a quality life.

Myth ❸Does a higher number of filter cartridges mean better purification?

This is a misconception.

A water purifier's effectiveness depends primarily on the filter material and filtration precision, not the quantity of cartridges. For instance, RO membranes remove bacteria, viruses, and heavy metals, while activated carbon excels at adsorbing odors and discoloration.

Moreover, many modern water purifiers now feature composite filter cartridge designs, integrating two or more filter materials (e.g., PP cotton + activated carbon) into a single housing. This not only reduces the number of cartridges but also combines the advantages of multiple filters, resulting in a more compact unit that saves installation space.

Myth 4: Do water purifier filters need to be replaced?

Yes.

As the “heart” of the water purifier, the filter cartridge is one of its most critical components. Timely replacement is fundamental to ensuring safe and pure water quality.

Using expired filters is like “wearing an expired mask.” Filters that should trap impurities have become saturated with contaminants. Continuing to use them not only weakens filtration effectiveness but also risks releasing accumulated pollutants into the water flow. This can degrade water quality, leading to unpleasant odors, a bitter taste, and even health risks.

Myth ➎: Is a higher wastewater ratio always better?

A higher wastewater ratio isn't necessarily better.

Excessively high ratios may come at the expense of filter lifespan. In practical use, maintaining a reasonable wastewater ratio—such as 2:1 or 3:1—best balances the purifier's durability and purification efficiency.

National water efficiency ratings are currently divided into three tiers: Tier 1 at 65%, Tier 2 at 55%, and Tier 3 at 45%. A 1:1 wastewater ratio meets the 50% water efficiency standard. Therefore, it is recommended to choose water purifiers that meet or exceed this benchmark.

When faced with various claims about water purifiers, it's essential to stay rational and educate yourself about the products. This ensures your water purifier truly delivers its intended benefits, providing your family with healthy, worry-free water for daily use.
